LEGISLATIVE UPDATE
Charlie Roberts
2/13/10
This was the first week of the 2010 Session with only four working days but they were filled with committee and subcommittee meetings. I am carefully watching several bills being prepared but none were ready for a hearing and neither Retirement Committee met this week. No meetings have been posted for next week which means monitoring Chamber Sessions since Committee Meetings can be called from the floor at any time in both the House and Senate.
In last weeks UPDATE, I did not report that HB 916 had passed the House because it is an ERS Bill and DOES NOT APPLY to TRS retirees on Return To Work Legislation. Unfortunately, one of the other education advocates reported it as a retirement issue which caused some member concern which I hope Dr,Sloan and I have corrected.
Tuesday will be Legislative Day 18 and begin another short week of what will be another long session. The economy will control the Fy 2011 Budget and expect major changed to the Fy 2010 Mid Term Adjustments. The state has no new money, revenue collections are down salary increases will be few if any. HB 542 which has projected cap for PSER members, (janitors, maids, cafeteria workers, bus drivers) did get a Do Pass from the House Retirement Committee with an Amendment stating " if funds are available ".
This UPDATE will continue to tell it as it is, so stay tuned.
